This the editorial aftermath of the major industry event which is now the starting point of the new underwater season.

The Moscow Dive Show stands full tilt for its status as the major turning point for Russia and the ex-SU. All major players showed off, both dive tourism and equipment retail, from Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine (quite a lot despite all odds), from the Batlic, from Kazakhstan, from Azerbaijan. Coming to Moscow to push the business is of certain convenience for all of them. The local markets are OK doing business via Moscow.

While visitors from Moscow city and the capital prevailed, guests from the rest of Russia and from abroad are nevertheless clearly visible.

The faur is growing. 30$ more exibitors, 60% more space, now 2 halls with a bigger entertainment area: the dive show has to deliver some show. A jumbo LED screen and an intense on-stage program is the the key for good mood.

New formats tested sucessfully. Those who camchecked in are in some relation to water over its surface: yachtsmen, surfers, board riders, stadup paddlers. Styles mixed up as the modern trnd. Yacht skippers launch dive regatas, guys with surfboards offers their fellow divers to relax between dives, liveaboards go for kite safari. Newcomers were positively impressed, and the overwater section is to grow with new exhibitors to join. The 2018 slogan woudl likely read the scene for water people, not just underwater.

Wider assortment and variety of both diove gear and dive tourism. Quite alot of new faces and new brands. What make this fair unique is that there are thing to see and to touch well before they appear in the shops or in the tour op listings.

Considerable growth in offer for inland dive tourism. Most visible proactivity from the White Sea and the Barents Sea, the Far East and Kamchatka.

Inland diving destinations are more or less the same big picture from year to year. 46% of the respondents went diving inlands in 2016, with 23% not going for abroad dive trips at all and 14% having logged dives in local water bodies, rivers, quarries only. And no one limited his diving just to the Black Sea.

The Far East, Kamchatch, Sakhalin have an obvious growth potential, with strong international interest for these coasts and seas. But the real Russian sea are of course the local water bodies. And of course the Volga.

Keep up with best practices

The Moscow Dive Show is like both Düsseldorf and Paris, trying to combine a B2B spot woth proactive marketing of products and travel packages, as some live cash flow goes well for everyone. This is of some use for liveaboards and dive resorts which not just scout local resellers among dive clubs and tour ops but also collect preorders from individuals backed by instant deposits.

Unique in-show events. Along with numerous presentations on main stage, worth mentioneing is the special screening of the Odyssee movie which had a wider theathical release and the speleodiving convention organised bty the Orda cave with dozens of star speakers.

Overall environment. Totally positive feedback from visitors and exhibitors. Most commnon quote: this was the best show for maybe the last 10 years.

BOOK OF RECORDS

Biggest booth: 210 sqm, Diskus. Most visitor check-ins on Expodat treminal: Море в моей голове / The Sea in My Head, i.e. these fellows succeeded in explaining what this terminals was for. Most popular exhibitor's event: daily Suunot giveaway, organised by Aqauatex. Coolest gadget: Seabob underwater scooter. Weirdest gadget: Seabike, the underwater pedal-driven bicycle.

Attendance: 20+ thousand in 4 days, part of them twice and more. Over 220 exhbitors from 25+ coutries have shown their flag.

Most important number: 585 respondents checekd the point «Came to choose activity: it's excalty them we invested efforts and money for, to promote the show in general-interest media, like radio, city portals, newspapers, billboards. The potential of market growth etimate is 10%. Beginners who dive the 1st or 2nd year, this the fresh blood, they coount 16%, and this in turn is the how much the market has grown over 2 years.

Male and female, younder and older

Diving is an acitivity for some wealth over average, which is reached at relevant age. Like everywhere worldwide, the underwater fellowship is mostly aged between 30 and 50, and this audience made up two thisrds of the attendance. Nevertheless the younger ones are considerably visible in freediveing and among those making up their minds what water activity to choose.

Aming divers (who declared diving as their activity, blue bricks in the diagram) aged people prevailed, median age over 40, and divers are male for more than two thirds. Meanwhile the novices (red bricks) are visibly younger: median 35 years, male and female almost equal. Though men dominate among underwater photographers (barely a quater female) and cave-tech-wreck divers (8 out of 9 are male).

Beginners in the 1st and 2nd year of diving are 16%, this is the market growt estimate for past 2 years. With ten per cent growth potentila, this is quite a conversion. The female share is visibly shrinking with experience, maybe men stay loyal to their hobby for longer or they for longer feel like boys.

Top-10 worldwide dive destinations

At learst 3 out of 4 respondents went 2016 diving abroad, while 54% been diving abroad only, with zero domestic dives.

Despite all odds, 38% went diving to Egypt, for almost half of them (15%) did not go elsewhere abroad, and almost a thisrd (11%) did not go to any other place to dive, even inlands. A while ago Egypt dominated the scene a lot more, with over a half of all dive trips, so that every second diver logged a dive in Egypt within a year.

The overall geography is rather segmented: the top-10 cover up some 70% of the desitnation variety, some 30% chose other places to dive. Beyond the top-10 are e.g. Norway and Cyprus..

The dates for the Moscow Dive Show 2018 are already set: Feb 1st to 4th, Thursday to Sunday. Same location: Sokolniki Covention Center, halls 4 and 4.1, over 7 thousand square meters. It would be even better abd more fun.
