How to save the world: Kuril Islands - a documentary film by Alexander Fedorov at Moscow Dive Show 2024

05 Feb 2024

The authors of the "I Want to Go Home” project went to the Kuril Islands, where the populations of sea lions and fur seals began to decline. Previously, it was believed that fishermen were to blame for this. But when the hunting of animals was banned, their populations first recovered, and then began to decline again. Finding out the reason was not so easy. But one thing is clear - what is happening threatens the future of all humanity, because we are all very closely connected in this ecosystem.

Watch the documentary "How to Save the World: Kuril Islands” on the big screen Moscow Dive Show 2024 on Sunday at 15:00. *** On his new journey, Alexander Fedorov goes to the Kuril Islands with the scientist biologist Vladimir Nikolaevich Burkanov. They will sail from Vladivostok to Kamchatka and study the rookeries of sea lions and fur seals. Vladimir has found a very clever way to monitor the populations of marine mammals. He installs autonomous solar-powered cameras and returns to them every year to collect data. His team learned to track mammal populations using machine vision. But their news is disappointing. Vladimir Nikolaevich says that populations of marine mammals in the Far East have declined significantly in recent years. It was believed that the fishermen were to blame for this. And as soon as the hunting of sea otters and fur seals was banned, their populations increased. It seemed that nature was easily restored. But a few years ago, the number of marine mammals began to decline again. And this time the reason is not so easy to understand. In an interview, Vladimir Nikolaevich says that populations are very closely related to the food supply. To show this, we find ourselves on Tyuleniy Island - the last corner of the Far East, where the population of fur seals and sea lions in the rookeries has not decreased. Tyuleniy Island is a symbol of the fact that if an ecosystem lives in harmony, it flourishes. The worst thing is that this is the only example. We spoke with a group of scientists who work on this island. We went to the Commander Islands to meet the same group of scientists on Medny Island, where we recorded a long interview with Vladimir Nikolaevich. Medny Island is located in a protected area. And despite the fact that they don’t fish there, the populations of fur seals and sea lions are declining. The reasons for this are unknown, but they are hidden somewhere in ecosystems. Vladimir Nikolaevich tells the story of his life. In his youth, he dreamed of studying the Amur tiger in the Far East. But in the 80s I came to Kamchatka and began studying marine mammals. He told how dangerous their first expeditions on inflatable motor boats in the Sea of ??Okhotsk were. Soon he received everything he dreamed of - the important post of deputy head of environmental protection of the Kamchatka Territory. He could not give up freedom, gave up his career and returned to expeditions. Humans greatly change ecosystems and climate. Moreover, animals, atmospheric processes and our well-being are very subtly interconnected. But we don't know exactly how. Therefore, Burkanov does not fully understand what caused the decline in mammal populations: fishing, ocean warming, or something else, such as climate change. He continues his research. And it is important for us to support the work of scientists who unravel how ecosystems work and how they are interconnected with human activity.
